What is going on with your baby during week 38?

Your baby may have assumed the head down position by now (the position majority of babies are in when their mothers go into labor). However if your baby hasn't, there still is a week or two more to go for baby to change positions. Your baby now weighs 6¾ lb or 3.1kg. Length hasn’t changed from the previous week.

If there is an obvious decrease in pressure on your diaphragm and an increase in pressure in your pelvis, chances are your baby has 'dropped'. This process - called 'lightening' can happen a few weeks prior to labor or just as labor begins. So while it cannot be taken as a sign that your baby's birth is imminent, it is a sign that labor is at the most a couple of weeks away.

You may wonder how your baby will affect your relationship with your partner. If it is already on solid grounds, then you can expect to weather this particular change without many problems. Of course nothing happens without hard work; you need to make spending time together a priority even if it proves tiring or strenuous especially of late. It is also important to talk future plans, issues on parenthood apart from having physical intimate moments. Try and find ways to convey to your partner how important he is to you through emails or gestures. These little things count and will help you navigate in troubled waters, especially after your baby arrives when you will need each other even more.
