What is going on with your baby during week 36?

Space is getting cramped; your baby's growth slows down considerably from now on. This month baby's weight increase will be about 25% only. For example baby will weigh about 6lbs (2.75kg) and measure about 21in (46cm) or 34cm (13½ in) from crown to rump at the start of the month (currently) but by the time you deliver, its weight and length will be 7.5lbs and 21½in. This applies to an average sized baby; some babies will be smaller and others bigger. Around this time your baby is still growing and there should be no problem if it is born any time from now on. The lungs are maturing, a process which will continue after the birth. Since it is less roomy in the uterus, your baby cannot move much so you are unlikely to feel as many kicks and elbows.

What is going on with you during week 36?

You may have gained 20-30lb (9-13kg) and you still have a month to go. It isn't unusual for your weight to stay the same at each of your weekly visits after this point. The maximum amount of amniotic fluid surrounds the baby now. However some of this fluid gets reabsorbed into your body, which decreases the fluid level and thereby offers more room to the baby. The increased pressure of the uterus on your stomach makes it difficult for you to digest normal sized meals. Mini meals and a series of snacks seems a better option rather than large meal portions.

Another list of interesting nutrition-packed snacks for you to consider:

• Yoghurt mixed with cereal and dried fruits

• Hard boiled eggs

• Dried fruit and nuts

• Low fat cheese slices

• Hummus and bean dips

• Whole grain crackers

• Muffins, breads, pitas

• Fresh fruits and vegetables

Most of these foods make for great meals and snacks even after your baby arrives, so keep your refrigerator well stocked as you may not find the time to do grocery shopping later.
