What is going on with your baby during week 18?

Your baby now measures 5-5½ inches (12.5-14cm) and weighs about 5¼ oz (150g). Your baby is continuing to grow and develop but the rapid growth rate slows down a little. Baby has a more human appearance now. Body hair is becoming coarser, eyelashes are beginning to appear on your baby's eyelids, baby's lips have formed, taste buds have started to develop, and regardless of gender, nipples are starting to develop on top of the mammary glands. The placenta is approximately half an inch thick and 3 inches across. By the time you deliver it will be 1½ inches thick and about 10-12 inches across.

What is going on with you during week 18?

Your uterus is the size of a cantaloupe. Your total weight gain should be about 10-13 pounds (4.5-5.8 kg). However this can vary from individual to individual. If you find your weight gain outside this range, you should address this with your doctor to be on the safe side. You still have more than half of your pregnancy ahead of you and a further weight gain is going to happen. As mentioned before, abnormal weight gain is going to make pregnancy, delivery and post delivery hard for you. Majority of your pregnancy weight will be gained at this point of pregnancy. Keep watching what you eat. Choose food with nutrition in mind. You are likely to find yourself extra hungry. Eating healthy snacks and meals at regular intervals, ideally every 2-3 hours, will help keep you and your baby well nourished.

What is going on with your head during week 18?

Despite not being overly superstitious, you may find yourself buying into a lot of pregnancy-related old wives tales these days, particularly relating to predicting the baby's gender. Ask around and you will hear lots of these tales which are no doubt interesting and amusing but bear no scientific relevance. For instance there will be occasions when strangers will come up to and tell you are carrying a boy because you are carrying lower; it will be a girl if you are carrying higher. The other favorite is the ring and the hair strand test.
